Our Story

The purpose of the organization for which the corporation was formed was to provide housing on the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservation, build, to lease property, sell and buy land and to do comprehensive planning activities for the area. The MIHC is willing and has always been involved and able to contribute any expertise in the housing sector for development desired by the Chiefs and Council.


In 1985 Iroquois Village a 24 unit apartment complex was completed in 1985 with financing under USDA-Rural Development 515 program. The units are subsidized under Housing Trust Fund Section 8 Site Specific Housing Choice Voucher Program. A fire in 1999 resulted in the loss of one building with 6 units, remaining are 18 subsidized units. 

Between 1988-1992 Phases I, II, & III of the Mohawk River Village was completed.  The 24 unit apartment complex was constructed under the Homeless Housing Assistance Program for 12 duplex buildings.  Monthly rent rates are far below county market rates.   

In 1989, Sweetflag Estates a 30 unit housing complex was completed with financing under the US Department of HUD Section 202 loan for the elderly and handicapped/disabled.  The units are subsidized under HUD Section 8 . 


In 2015, the former Supportive Apartment Program/Emergency Housing was replaced with four mobile homes targeting Emergency & Transitional families with all-inclusive monthly rent rates far below county market rates. 

MIHC provides rental management for 80 units for the elderly, handicapped, disabled, low and very low income families. Staff provides workshops, activities calendar and informational training depending on the needs. Tenant responsibilities and eviction prevention counseling is provided as needed. 


The CSBG program funds a driver for a transportation program for the elderly, handicapped/disabled and very low and low income residents three days per week year round.

During the last 5 years, MIHC completed over $1,175,232.00 in apartment property rehabilitation through various grants and owner equity.  This includes current upgrades of siding and insulation from a new 2020 grant that will invest $203,364.00.
